Many people are unaware of how easily they can be sunburnt and the damage it does. Sun exposure during childhood and adolescence determines to a substantial degree the potential for developing skin cancer in later life. It is ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun that causes sunburn and damage to the skin cells which can later result in skin cancers. New Zealand has one of the highest rates of melanoma in the world. It's time to get the SunSmart message out there!
Students need to create a short video clip (up to 5 minutes long) that tells a story of how and why their school/kura is or should be Sunsmart.
Possible Story lines could include:
It could be a movie. It could use still photography, or stop motion animation or cartoons. It could be a play, a documentary or even a song or rap. The possibilities are endless as long as it has a Sunsmart theme!
Being SunSmart is a community issue and this challenge reflects that – so students can’t do it on their own. Students can do the challenge as a whole school, a whole class working together, or as a group from a school or class.
This video competition can be developed as a context for inquiry in your local environment, and can also provide opportunities to develop key competencies and values. Curriculum areas can be integrated: The Arts, English (speaking, writing and presenting), Science, Social Sciences (Place and the Environment) and Health & PE.
This is what the judges will be looking for in your video clips.....
